Snowboarder Lucas Magoon of Rutland, VT defeated
his pal and defending champ Niko Cioffi, also of Rutland, while
Cassandra Herbes (Sparta, NJ) defended her title Saturday night at the
second annual $15,000 Rails to Riches Rail Jam at Killington Resort.
“I
just came to ride,” said Herbes, who won last’s year’s inaugural event
and pocketed another $1,000 for the victory. “This is only my second day
on snow this season, so I just wanted to have fun with it.”
Both
Magoon and Cioffi qualified for the Union Square Street Sessions taking
place on Thursday, February 8 in New York City’s Union Square.
In
the ski division, John Strenio (Burlington, Vt.) and Kim Lamarre
(Lac-Beauport, Quebec) took top honors. The crowd applauded Strenio's
"heart" for riding with short sleeves and what became bloodied elbows,
but his spirit never sagged.
Magoon and (skier)
Strenio each won $4,000, all while beating out some of the best jibbers
and rail riders in the Northeast.
“I just got lucky. I
have never won this much money before in my life,” said Strenio, who
used the shavings from a local rink near his home to set up a few rails
and sharpen his technical skiing skills. Strenio was also impressed with
the effort the Killington Pipe and Park Crew put into this year’s event
by adding another rail .“Last year was awesome, but this year the
Killington Park Crew really stepped it up,” he said. “It was a very
professionally run event.”
During the rail jam, an
electronically controlled bonfire above the rail set-up occasionally
shot high into the air, like something from the Wizard of Oz. After the
rail jam, the lights were turned off and spectacular winter fireworks
lit up the hill. There was a benefit party in the K-2 Lodge after the
jam, and partiers took the gondola up in the silent spooky darkness to
arrive in style. The extreme snowsports movie "Push" was shown, and this
early evening "18 and over" party was a chatty, networking type of
affair rather than a raucous bacchanalia.
Highlights from the
Second Annual Rails to Riches will air on NBC January 21 from 3:00 to
4:00 p.m. EST as part of the Jeep World of Adventure Sports program. In
addition, footage will also be broadcast on NBC February 18 from 1:30 to
2:30 p.m. EST as part of the Union Square Street Sessions. Highlights
will also be included on Fuse TV from January 1 through February 8
promoting the Union Square Street Sessions.
