Photos and Facts from the 2007
US Open of Snowboarding

Burton US Open 2007

Finals were March 16, 17, and 18, at Stratton Mountain, Vermont

by Lauren Traub Teton

Spring Riding in Vermont? It was more like winter finally arrived. Thursday the Slopestyle Qualifiers  were postponed due to rain. Then the snow started and there was an actual blizzard Friday night necessitating the cancellation of the bands that were scheduled to play in Stratton Village and making for lots of smaller house parties instead of one big united hoop-de-doo outside in town.

Saturday the Halfpipe Competition was delayed while the groomers dug the pipe out from under its snowcover, and it remained a slow pipe all day. There was plenty of space for spectators along the pipe unlike other years. Many people just couldn't make it up for the Open in the snowstorm.  A lot of the contestants fell when they rode, but Shaun White went huge, landed  like a cat,  and pulled off another big win. He was elated!

Saturday night the much anticipated Big Air Comp under the lights in the Village had to be cancelled due to gusts of wind that blew the airborne riders dangerously off course. When the cancellation was announced, hordes of hungry cold tired spectators tried to crowd into the restaurants, making for long waits. Saturday night's outdoor concert was cancelled because Pennywise couldn't get a flight in during the snowstorm.

Sunday the weather goddess smiled on the Junior Jam and there were some blue skies, to end things up beautifully. The Junior Jam in the halfpipe is a fun end to the Open and let's you watch the winners of tomorrow, today!
